Winter is around the corner, but it’s not here just yet. We still have a few balmy days ahead. So what does this mean to you and for your pets and ticks??? Ticks are the most active at temperatures between 4 and 24 degrees Celsius. They love this fall weather, and this is why we are recommending that you protect yourselves and pets a little bit longer.
Here at the College Manor Veterinary Hospital, we recommend that you continue your furry friends tick prevention until the temperatures are consistently below 4 degrees Celsius. To protect yourself we recommend wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts while out walking, even tucking your pants into your socks when you are hiking in long grass and wooded areas.
We also recommend that you stay on clear and unobstructed trails. It is a good idea to check yourselves and your dog’s once you come indoors. If you do find a tick on yourself, or your dog, safe, prompt removal is essential in preventing tick-borne illness transmission. Ticks bury their heads in your skin and it is extremely important to remove the entire tick ensuring that you have not left any mouth parts behind.
If you aren’t comfortable removing any ticks from your pets, please don’t hesitate to call us and we can gladly do it for you. If you would like to learn more about ticks please read our blog about them.
